Admissions Process

1. Academic Testing

Option A: If you have already taken the ACT/SAT in the 7th grade as a part of the Duke TIP program, you need to upload a copy of your ACT score report to the application. Other nationally normed achievement tests (ISEE, IRB, Iowa) may be accepted to meet this requirement with approval from the admissions committee. Option B: If you have NOT taken the ACT yet an 8th grade version of the test, the ACT Explore, will be given at Houston High School during the following dates and times. Testing lasts approximately 2.5 hours. You DO NOT need to register with the ACT, you should register directly with Houston High Honors Academy.

2. Prepare your Writing Sample

 

Writing Prompt:

 

People rely on cell phones to communicate with each other through phone calls and texts, connect to the world using the Internet, and rely on apps to complete everyday tasks, like asking Alexa to turn on the lights. Many people feel lost, or sometimes even depressed, without their cell phones. Is this normal? How did we get to this place? Based on the articles, do you believe cell phones are controlling the way that people live and communicate?

  • To support your ideas, cite textual evidence from at least three of the provided articles and incorporate specific examples from your own knowledge and experience. ​

  • Be sure to identify your sources by the author’s last name.

  • Remember that your response will be evaluated on your understanding of the articles and on the quality of your writing.

 

Your essay should be between 500-600 words in length. After composing your essay in a word processing program, you will need to copy it into the box on the application form.

 
3. Fill out the Application
  • Have your writing sample ready to copy and paste into the form

  • If you have taken the ACT/SAT gather those score reports. If you took the ACT Explore at Houston High, you DO NOT need those score reports to complete your application.

4. Interviews
  • Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their application responses, test scores, grades, and writing samples.

  • Applicants who are invited to interview will be notified by January 25, 2020 with further instructions.

  • Interviews will be conducted January 21, 2020- January 30, 2020.

5. Acceptance Confirmation
  • Acceptance letters will be e-mailed and mailed on February 7, 2020

  • Students must confirm acceptance by February 14, 2020.

  • Students must register for at least 3 honors classes including Honors English.

  • Open Enrollment applicants must complete open enrollment process with GMSD.
